Saint Mary of the Springs, Hot Springs

Established in 1869, the church bears two cornerstones. One from a previous structure dated 1886, and a second from the present church built in 1923.

The photos were taken on Good Friday morning.

In my travels around the state of Arkansas, I tend to be drawn to houses of worship. There is an amazing diversity of architectural styles when it comes to churches, and I try to record that diversity here. Please excuse my amateur bumbling with a camera; I'm learning as I go along.

I own a stained glass studio called Arkansas Glassworks, so my interest in the state's churches springs from my work. In my meetings with the folks who attend and care for these buildings, I always come away with a feeling that a church is more than it appears. A church is a shell whose spirit resides within.
