St. Andrew's Catholic, Little Rock

I've been asked to post a picture of the oldest church in Little Rock. I believe that would be St. Andrews, at 7th and Louisiana. It's the oldest existing church structure, anyway, having been built in 1881.

The problem is, in order to get the bulk of the church in a photograph, you have to shoot it from half a block away. It's that big. The steeple starts a mile up and goes on for another mile after that.

So, I thought I'd take several shots and hope for the best.


St. Andrew's seems always to be in some phase of restoration. Lately, the stained glass windows have been getting a lot of attention. I'll try to get some interior pictures sometime in the near future.







The front doors show a carved relief sculpture of the twelve Apostles. When the afternoon sun hits them, they're a sight to behold.

Bayou Meto Baptist, Pulaski County

One more steeple-entry. Even though this a a much more modest sized church than the last two entries, it still has a rather grand facade in relation to its size. I like this one the best because it's less clunky. Also, the half-circular steps provide a nice foundation and their roundness gives counterpoint to the straight lines.

First Baptist, Sheridan

Here's another church with a big old steeple-entry. I spoke with a nice lady in the church office who told me when First Baptist of Sheridan moved into their new building, they brought some of the old stained glass with them and installed it above the entry and below the steeple. She said doing so was the only way some of the elders of the church would agree to the move. Don't you love church politics?

Central Baptist, Conway

These grand steeple / entries seem to be popular in new churches these days. I guess they identify an otherwise nondescript building as being a church.

New Jerusalem Baptist, North Little Rock

Don't know whether this church has a steeple or a cupola, and I sure don't know what the style is. But I do know it's unusual. For Arkansas, anyway.

St. Mary's Catholic Church, Helena

St. Peter's Episcopal, Conway

This is the main entrance to the original St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Conway. It was built in 1944. The width of the church was only three times the width of the doorway.

Here's what it looks like from the south. I love the sets of twin gothic arches, their brick surrounds and the row of buttresses. I suspect the roof line in the rear was part of the later addition.

Here's the 1963 addition, perhaps better described as a new attached church. They kept a hint of the buttresses and recreated the scale of the old entrance, but then it opens up further west to a much larger building. I like the placement of the steeple at the low point of the new church. Somehow it reconciles the old and the new and brings unity to a juxtaposition that would otherwise be jarring. I don't know about those dormers, though.
